Who we are

In 2002, Rafael, a 30-year-old Spaniard, left for Lamu with the idea of renting a property and using it to house the orphans and abandoned children he had seen begging or searching through the rubbish for food. This personal initiative soon needed more solid foundations, because Africa is a very demanding environment where desperate cases appear every day. With the help of family and friends, Rafael founded Anidan, a non-profit, apolitical and non-religious organisation that publicises the work of the Association, raises money in Spain for the local NGO Anidan Kenya and helps implement the programmes carried out in that country.

Their happiness is
our best reward

We focus on the most vulnerable children. Anidan welcomes children who are living in poverty, abandoned or orphaned, are at risk of being mistreated or abused or suffer from illnesses that cannot be treated within their local environments. The most vulnerable children come to sleep in the shelter.

In addition, we maintain support programmes for a population impoverished by the drought and conflicts suffered in this part of Africa.

Since March 2007, in collaboration with the Pablo Horstmann Foundation, we have had a paediatric hospital that provides more than 8,000 consultations a year in the hospital itself and hundreds in outpatient activities, all free of charge. Anidan Italia was founded in October 2011 in Rome and supports the projects of Anidan Kenya.

Our team

In Lamu (Anidan Kenya) we have a team of professionals led by Rafael Selas who handle the running of the aid programmes. There the workers are Kenyans. In many cases these are young people who have been educated through us and now work in Anidan. Their presence serves as an example for the children and allows us to communicate easily with them and their families, as well as to help the development of this deprived society.

Also under the management of Rafael, we have teams in Spain (Anidan Ayuda a Niños de África) and Italy (Anidan Onlus), almost entirely made up of volunteers, who are responsible for the advice, administration, dissemination and promotion of the activities in Lamu, as well as fund-raising and contact with partners, sponsors, donors and collaborating companies.

Some data

Our size, practices and firm commitment to efficiency and clarity mean that we are transparent. The people who visit us are our main stakeholders and our accounts are audited and are public. We take care of every euro that is spent.

We have been working in Lamu since 2002 without incidents or problems of any kind, be they social, economic, financial, legal or administrative, and we have worked in cooperation with the local and county councils of the different political parties and movements during this time. Over this time period we have already cared for around 500 children and handled more than 100,000 consultations in our paediatric hospital. If you need some more details download our reports.

Everyone’s constant hard work is paying off and the children are turning into professionals. We have almost 50 already! They swap certain failure for a future full of possibilities that allows them to be part of the most dynamic segment of the country’s population. More than half of these professionals are women. This is a success in the fight against injustice and the human, social and economic waste caused by the marginalisation of women.

A sustainable commitment

Fortunately we have broad and solid institutional and private support which makes our project a secure and sustainable commitment.

More than 1,300 private donors collaborate with us financially, year after year. They are mainly based in Spain, but also in Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.

From our position of independence we collaborate with the local government in Lamu. The procedures for accepting the children are managed and supervised by the local child protection authorities and we have signed a collaboration agreement with the health department at the county council to coordinate our paediatric hospital with the hospital network in the Kenyan public health system. Important private institutions support us on an ongoing basis.
